Making the Repatriation of Prisoners Fairer

Making the Repatriation of Prisoners Fairer

Fair Trials International has prepared a briefing on prisoner repatriation.

In 2010, nearly 100 people sentenced abroad were transferred to prisons in England and Wales to serve the remainder of their sentence closer to family and friends, a process which is hugely important to rehabilitation. Through campaigning work, Fair Trials International is highlighting an unintended problem with the length of time transferred prisoners are required to serve when they return home.

The briefing sets out a simple proposal to address the serious injustice and unnecessary expense caused by the current system for repatriating British prisoners to the UK. This paper deals with the application of early release provisions to repatriated prisoners’ sentences.
