FTI BRIEFING ON ACCESS TO LEGAL ADVICE
In June 2011, the European Commission proposed a new law to guarantee anyone facing criminal charges in an EU country access to a lawyer and the right to communicate with family members and consular officials. It contains key protections for people facing extradition under Europe’s fast-track extradition regime, the European Arrest Warrant.
Fair Trials International has long campaigned for stronger defence safeguards alongside this. We welcomed the Directive and have now circulated a detailed briefing on it, supported by case studies from our own clients.
