Working for a world where every person's right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused

POLICE HIT WITH THOUSANDS OF ARREST WARRANTS FROM POLAND

THE TELEGRAPH - TOM WHITEHEAD

Police had to chase down almost 2,500 suspected "criminals" on behalf of the Polish authorities last year, including a man accused of exceeding his overdraft limit.

The latest figures were contained in a formal response to the Government review from Fair Trials International (FTI) which called for a proportionality test to be incorporated in to the system.

Jago Russell, FTI Chief Executive said: “Our clients' cases highlight serious and recurring problems with Europe’s fast-track extradition regime.

"Ordinary people – teachers, firemen, chefs and students – have seen their lives and futures blighted by this 'no questions asked' system that has failed to safeguard their basic rights.

"FTI has long campaigned for an EAW system that upholds rather than undermines justice and hopes that the extradition review will recommend changes to the UK’s extradition arrangements to ensure they work effectively and in the interests of justice."
