Commenting on the FO annual figures, Jago Russell, chief executive of human rights charity Fair Trials International, said: "As millions of Britons prepare for foreign holidays, these statistics are a reminder that for a few people foreign travel ends in disaster.
"Among these statistics are some shocking stories of people who have suffered injustice, torture and mistreatment by foreign police, arbitrary detention and grossly unfair trials. The UK Government should not only warn Britons of potential risks but can also play a crucial role in directly defending the rights of Britons arrested abroad."
