Mr Arapi said: "But after media pressure and the support of charity Fair Trials International the warrant was chewed up after 12 months of hell."

Speaking at the committee meeting, Fair Trials International spokesman Catherine Heard said: "We need basic safeguards in place, at the moment there is no right to see the evidence against you and no right to legal representation in both countries.

"We need to build in sufficient discretion for judges dealing with extradition requests because at the moment their hands are tied."
