Our Mission:
To work for fair trials based on international standards of justice and defend the rights of those facing charges in a country other than their own.

Fair Trials International

FTI’s networks

Supporting, training and mentoring fair trial and human rights defenders across the world

Fair Trials International is committed to improving access to justice around the world and a key element of this is working to improve access to criminal defence. Despite great advances in the administration of justice across the globe, there remain many countries where providing essential defence representation is poorly valued or worse, actively threatened.

For this reason, Fair Trials International works to maintain and expand our networks. In this way, we can host peer-to-peer support, mentoring and training for defenders and bolster their efforts to secure fair trials according to international standards of justice in the communities where they practice.

As part of this capacity-building programme, we hold regular forums and meetings, and have recently established a new group, the Young Defenders’ Network, to identify and support the next generation of fair trial defenders.

Young Defenders’ Network:

This network aims to provide mentoring, peer-to peer support specialised training to emerging criminal defence lawyers and human rights defenders. It also hosts online discussions on issues of common concerns and to enable exchange of best practice among members.

EU Fundamental Rights Network:

This network brings together EU NGOs, academics and legal practitioners concerned at how fundamental rights across Europe are being undermined by the new security agenda. It forms the basis for specific campaigns to defend and promote fundamental rights and access to justice.
