Working for a world where every person's right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused
Peter Laking - Vietnam
"I have been working closely with Fair Trials International and have called on the UK Government to intervene more effectively to ensure the Vietnamese government names a trial date and allows Peter to return home to the UK while on bail.”
Caroline Lucas MEP 2006 (Mr Laking was granted bail but is prohibited from leaving Vietnam and has since suffered three strokes)
British businessman still awaits court decision for an 8 year old accusation
British businessman Peter Laking has been embroiled in the Vietnamese legal system for over 8 years after relations with his two Irish business partners turned sour. His former partners claim to have been defrauded by Peter and his business partner Sean McCormack, but Peter and Sean stridently deny these charges. After a 3 month initial investigation in Vietnam, no charges were filed and both Peter and Sean were free to return to the UK in time for Christmas 2002.
Peter returned to Vietnam on 16 May 2004 only to be arrested at the airport on charges of fraudulently taking property. Peter has since been re-indicted on different charges numerous times and it took 8 years for the Vietnamese courts to try him. He was convicted in September 2010 and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. Peter is currently appealing against his conviction and FTI will continue to provide all the support it can to ensure Peter finally is given a fair trial.
