Working for a world where every person's right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused

Campaigns

Our vision is a world where every person's right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused

Since it was first established in 1992, Fair Trials International has provided direct assistance to thousands of people imprisoned far from home and prevented serious miscarriages of justice across the globe.

Sadly, those who need our help repeatedly report the same problems time and again: lack of interpretation so they cannot understand the case against them; detention without trial for months or years on end; and police cooperation tools that do not respect basic rights.

Over the last three years, we have begun to address the root causes of these injustices through targeted lobbying work. Working with our clients we are able to demonstrate the human cost of injustice and make a compelling public and political case for reform.

Two priority areas at present include:

  • Justice in Europe: launched in 2009, our campaign calls on Europe to work together to improve the protection for basic fair trial rights – and not to undermine them. We are currently focusing on:
  1. Preventing the unjust overuse of the EU's fast-track extradition system, the European Arrest Warrant;
  2. Building support for new legislation on key defence rights;
  3. Stopping excessive and unjust detention without trial; and
  4. Ensuring effective safeguards for proposed evidence-sharing laws.
  • Interpol: we are working to highlight the cases of injustice being caused by this police cooperation tool and we are calling for effective safeguards against abuse.
