Submission to the European Union Justice and Home Affairs Council Working Group
Fair Trials International has long been calling for the introduction of binding legislation at EU level to protect people’s fundamental rights to a fair trial. This means introducing minimum procedural safeguards on issues like legal advice, access to interpreters and translations of relevant documents, legal aid, and communication with family and consular officials as early as possible in the process.
Today we have written to the EU Justice and Home Affairs Committee Working Group on this issue, to support an initiative by the new Swedish Presidency to prioritize these minimum safeguards. Download our submission, which is supported by case studies, below.
