Annual Review

As this annual review demonstrates, 2008 was an important year for FTI with major successes and developments in all areas of our work.

During the course of the year FTI supported hundreds of people in their fight for justice, providing a lifeline to those facing criminal charges in a country other than their own. With our help unfair convictions were overturned and innocent people were released from jail and reunited with their families. There were also significant achievements in our work to tackle the underlying causes of unfair trials. Our training programmes increased the capacity of criminal lawyers around the world to defend fair trial rights and we successfully lobbied for stronger safeguards for defendants’ rights.

We have ambitious plans to build on our many past successes. Our unique casework practice gives us an unparalleled insight into the injustice too often suffered by people facing charges in a foreign country. In 2009 we will make sure that policy debates on cross border criminal justice take better account of our clients’ real-life experiences and that FTI’s voice is more clearly heard. We will also stimulate a public discussion on the assistance governments should provide to their citizens facing the ordeal of a trial overseas.
